Klondike (ENG SUBS)
In a Ukrainian village situated on the border with Russia, anxiety mounts at the onset of the Donbas conflict. The local residents, Irka and Tolik, are anticipating the birth of their first child amidst this tense atmosphere. On July 17, 2014, one of the darkest days in aviation history, the passenger plane MH17 crashes in their village. The plane and a misdirected separatist missile have caused considerable damage to the house, but that hasn’t stopped the determined Irka from staying home to give birth to her child despite the intensified unrest and comments from her husband.
The film, Klondike, directed by Maryna Er Gorbach, deviates from the customary pseudo-documentary approach typically employed in war films, and instead emphasizes the individual experiences of civilians as their homes abruptly become perilous. Without relying on excessively explicit imagery, Klondike still effectively captures the raw emotions and incidents of the war.
