UNEARTH – In Between States of Matter
Duration: 18 minutes
Russia / 2021
Unearth presents research into processes connected to resource extraction and zooms in on material transformations and mining machines. It weaves together fragments from conversations that were recorded in the Russian Ural Mountain region, dealing with the emergence of new minerals, an obsession with stones and the life cycle of machines.
Israël/Palestina / 2021
Unrendered Road traces the road between two ancient cities — Jerusalem and Jericho. A journey that Google Maps will not show you — an unrendered road. By assembling conflicting perceptual readings, the reliance of existing knowledge systems are questioned, including regulations and legislations, on geo-political power structures and sedimented historical inequities. The resultant ‘editing’ of reality is made manifest through the interface by which we navigate a conflicted border zone.
Tru’ong Minh Quy
Short & Mid-length
Duration: 15 minutes
In mining, a slag heap refers to an artificially raised hill consisting of the cleared waste that accumulates during the extraction of raw materials. Birch trees now grow where workers from near and far once went underground to labour hard for very little money. Nowadays, this is a place where men meet to have anonymous sex and share moments of intimacy. “I think he was gay too,” says one of these men about his father who was a miner. Today, as in the past, those who cannot find shelter elsewhere live here. Home is far away, returning is impossible. Human beings need more than water and a tent.
